When Is LASIK Not For Me?

According to the FDA, you are not a good candidate for refractive eye surgery if:

• It will jeopardize your career – check with your employer to ensure there are no prohibitions against refractive eye surgery. This is especially important for military personnel.
• Cost is an issue – not all insurances cover LASIK operations. Call one of our insurance specialists to see what coverage your insurance provider offers.
• You required a change to your contact lens or glasses prescription in the past year – this is common in patients who are in their early 20s or younger, pregnant or breastfeeding, taking medications that might cause fluctuations in vision, or whose hormones are fluctuating due to diseases such as diabetes.
• You have a disease or medication that may affect wound healing – some conditions may prevent or inhibit proper healing after LASIK eye surgery. Talk with your doctor and one of our optometrists to learn more.
• You participate in contact sports – if you are active in a sport where blows to the face and eyes are common, LASIK is not for you. This includes martial arts, boxing, football & rugby, and wrestling.
• You are not a risk taker – although LASIK is generally considered safe, and our doctors do everything possible to ensure your eyes remain healthy, there is no long term data available yet for current procedures.
