Our doctors use techniques and equipment to test your child’s basic vision, eye movement, eye health, and also to detect a significant refractive error. These evaluations are much more focused than screenings done in the pediatrician’s office or schools and include treatment plans if problems are detected. While vision screenings are important, they only test for 20-30% of vision problems that may interfere with learning.

Signs of Vision Problems

Preschool age children might have vision problems, even if they have never complained about it. There are a handful of signs the AOA recommends looking for in young children that might indicate a problem. These include:

• Sitting close to the TV or holding a book too close
• Squinting
• Tilting their head
• Frequently rubbing their eyes
• Short attention span for the child’s age
• Turning of an eye in or out
• Sensitivity to light
• Difficulty with eye-hand-body coordination when playing ball or bike riding
• Avoiding coloring activities, puzzles and other detailed activities
