Congratulations to Lexi Lambert, a first-year nursing student at Shenandoah University, who is our Fall 2018 Nicholas A. Pennipede Memorial Scholarship winner. Lexi will receive $1,000 from Eye Associates to apply toward her education.
We were moved by Lexi’s essay about using her education to help populations in need. She wrote, in part:
After losing my father to melanoma at age eight, I knew I wanted to help people – the problem was I did not know how! I graduated with a Health Sciences degree but, after receiving my diploma, I was too eager to use my knowledge to go straight to graduate school. I packed my bags and moved to Bolivia! I was a full-time health volunteer at a home for abandoned, abused and neglected children for a year. My time away from home made me value my education and my voice, and instilled in me a desire to provide health care to at-risk populations. I saw a lot of need in the world and too few people providing help. I am currently a first-year nursing student at Shenandoah University and plan to pursue disaster relief nursing, specifically in pediatrics.
Thank you for this scholarship – it will allow me to pay off my student debts more quickly. The faster my loans are paid off, the faster I can get out in communities and help heal the forgotten – and the freer I will be to help make the world just a little bit better.
It is truly an honor for us to offer annual financial assistance to students like Lexi. Eye Associates provides two Nicholas A. Pennipede Memorial Scholarships each year (spring and fall).
