It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael “Mike” Epstein, an exceptional certified optician and a beloved member of Eye Associates family. For many years, Mike dedicated himself to providing exceptional care and service to our patients, while bringing warmth, kindness, and a positive spirit to everyone he encountered. His absence is profoundly felt, but today we want to celebrate his life and the lasting impact he made on so many.
Mike joined our clinic in 1996 and quickly became known for his gentle approach and dedication to improving people’s lives through eye care. He was more than an optician; he was a mentor, a friend, and a bright light for both colleagues and patients.
Memories from Those Who Knew Him
His colleagues have shared countless stories that illustrate Mike’s sense of humor. One story that stands out is from Dave McNeal who said:
"My first day, I tagged along with him to HyVee next door to grab lunch. We chatted about history and eyeglasses and everything. I pull up a chair to settle down to eat and continue to chat and he asks, "What are you doing?" "Uhhh, I was gunna eat in here and chat." "Don't get me wrong. I like you, but no you're not. This is my time to be alone and decompress." One of the friendliest people I've ever known, until it was lunch time, LOL."
Another colleague, Chad Dike, reflected on Michael’s positive influence:
"He was a true mentor and teacher to many! He helped set my path and opened my eyes (no pun intended) to a path I didn't know was available. He became a true friend. We spent many hours at dog parks or enjoying each other's company in our homes. He never denied a request to get the dogs together for a little fun. You will be missed my friend."
Morgan Wixson also shares many memories with Mike:
Mike and I became fast friends with our love of cars, he loves all things Volkswagen and when I first started I had a GT Mustang, we always wanted to race, we never did; however we did go for rides in each others cars to appreciate each on their own. He taught me so many things in the lab that I still carry and practice to this day. He was a wealth of knowledge, I started to call him “Reg”, as he was the ‘regional lab manager’ knower of all things. Every email he would sign off to me with: “Mikey(Reg)”. He is and will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure to know him.
Mike in His Own Words
We were fortunate to have captured a video of Mike where he introduced himself and spoke about his role in the clinic. In the video, Mike shared his passion for his work and highlighted his favorite part of the job: making his customers happy. His enthusiasm and commitment were evident in every word, and this video serves as a beautiful reminder of the joy he brought to both patients and colleagues.
